What are your motivations to pursue an MBAN? (200 Words) 

While in my internship as a financial product manager, I handled several activities that revolved around the economic analysis. I was actively involved in analyzing financial information for clients, that assisted in determining appropriate investment strategies. Other responsibilities included discussing the performance of the financial market with the other employees. For the time I worked here, I noticed that I was gradually integrating business acumens such as management, financial abilities, irrespective that my specialization was in Economic and Statistics. Although I have been exposed to the tools of data analysis, I feel a need to learn in-depth advanced analytical tools and methods to address management challenges in today’s big data business environment. The learning will enable me to in future become a business analyst in an investment company or a bank. UBC Master of Business Analytics will allow me to achieve this goal of mine because it has Analytics Consulting Internship, which can expose me to working with real industry data. Also, I motivated by the MBAN from UBC because it covers the full analytics spectrum, from data management to data analytics to decision analytics. Therefore, before I graduate, I will be able to make sound data-driven business solutions.

In your own words, how does analytics in a business context differ from pure data science? (200 Words)

 Data science studied data by use of statistics, algorithms and technology. More generally, data science requires an understanding of extracting meaning from and interpret data, which needs both tools and methods from statistics and machine learning, as well as being human. Such, it uses both structured and unstructured data to give insight in regards to the particular phenomenon that is under investigation. The specialization studies patterns and trends, thus making it more general. On the other hand, business analytics is the statistical study of the business data and usually uses unstructured data. The business analytics goes beyond the analysis of the data, and make decisions concerning a real-life situation using the analyzed data. The specialization explores the past performance of the business to aid in planning.  Analytics is prescriptive, devoted to methodologies by the company can analyze the data, recognize the patterns and come up with models to explain past events. Such, analytics focused on a specific problem to find a solution. Also, the future of data science would be witnessed in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.  Contrary, the future applications of Business Analytics would be seen in Cognitive Analytics and Tax analytics.

The UBC MBAN program prepares leaders who seek to create value for the world through thoughtful, data-driven solutions to difficult problems. Please describe a situation in which you added a steal to an organization by solving a significant problem. How did you collaborate to reach this goal, and what was the outcome? (500 Words)

Presently, I serve vice minister of the marketing department in the University of Toronto filming club. My role, part from deputizing the minister, is to be in charge of publicity, to make sure that the club is visible to students and the rest of the University’s fraternity. Some of the activities I am involved at include writing of film publicity articles, management of the platforms, and organizing of meetings, among other roles. Despite having a tight school schedule, I gave been able to manage this role, together with the classwork, thus understanding the essence of time management. one of the critical parts that I am involved at is the management of the seven platforms that we currently run. To improve the functionality of the club, we decided to collect data from page views of every platform every month. The approach was aimed at understanding how effective the platforms were in enabling us to achieve our objective. Also, the data could have helped us to determine the most popular movies based on the comments of the viewers. Gaining insight in regards to this information could have allowed us to determine which content to publish at what particular time, and for which audience.

To complete this project, I involved other members of the club in collecting the views from the seven platforms. The approach was much effective since it is saved on time, and we were able to collect and organize the data within a few days of dedication. We browsed through the websites of the seven platforms, extracted every comment, and later managed that information for analysis. In this case, we applied basic statistics, which included calculation of means of page view of every article related to the movie, and the total page view and mean of each platform. The opportunity to deal with these basic data improved my data analysis skills. In the same vein, working with a team amplified my ability to lead people with a common plan. Starting this project to completion was a joint effort the resulted in an insightful outcome.

After completing the process of data analysis, we found out that a video commenting about professors attracted more attention. This exposition shifted our focus to using platforms such as Wechat and Youtube. The reason for directing our efforts to social media was because most of the students spent much of their time here, and the views on the club’s platforms were less. This meant that however much I pushed the content in the seven platforms, the outcome ineffective. We made an important decision directed by data, and a similar approach can be taken in the real business case.

Success in the field of data analytics requires both self-sufficiency and collaboration. How will you utilize these different skills to be successful in the program, and beyond? (200 Words)

What makes me ideal for a business analytics program at UBC is the attribute of self-drive and always wanting to develop myself in areas that I found myself in. For example, I already got the SAS base certificate, and I am planning to get the SAS advance certificate before June 2021. when getting into the master’s program at your University, I not only be comfortable with what is offered in the curriculum. I will stretch my capability, and do a proficiency course that would supplement my skills in analysis, especially focusing on finance. I will try my best to get the CFA certificate and SQL, which will enable me to gain knowledge of working with financial data, and how to use the same to establish the performance of the business. This way, I will be more relevant in the industry and contribute to the diverse field of business analytics. In the same vein, I understand that to succeed in data analytics; I will have to embrace collaboration with students and professors. I will create a good rapport with students to discuss various topics in the program, and reach out to the course professors for further clarifications of concepts.
