In the medieval era, schulde referred to taxation. This meaning is denoted in how the text talks about how taxing processes became the norm during the era of Cyrenus as the governor of Syria. Additionally, the term knouleche is noted in the same extract, referring to how Joseph knew Mary and later married. The term beweddod in the Old English text shows that Germanic cultures had a lasting effect on the development of English as a language. Geworden is another word used in the same extract and has Germanic origins, which means ‘to become.’ By looking at the excerpts provided, one can argue that Scandinavian influence significantly impacted the development of English, considering that its impact lasted for more than 400 years. There is enough evidence in the texts used in this study to show that even though Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians always engaged in brutal wars, their interactions had a lasting effect on the development of European languages.
