The Bright Side of Stress-Induced Eating: Eating More When Stressed but Less When Pleased
Research Problem
According to previous research studies, there is an increased food consumption among people in negative situations than in favorable situations. However, it is crucial to conclude that eating patterns vary across different situations.
Introduction
Increased food consumption as a result of stress is a maladaptive coping mechanism. Previous studies indicate that food consumption increases by 50% during stressful conditions (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). However, positive experiences and situations alter eating patterns among people. According to statistics, hyperphagic eat less to respond to favorable situations while hypophagics eat more.
Methodology
Sampling was the major research method used to obtain information. Two hundred and fifty-one participants from the University of Konstanz were involved, with 29% as men and 71% as women (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). During the scheduled appointment, the participants filled up a questionnaire on first impressions and media-consumption habits. The questions on first impressions divided the participants into three conditions; the rejected condition, the neutral, and the accepted condition. It also contained a manipulation experiment that focused on imposing negative feelings on the participants and their reactions to social inclusion and exclusion. On the other hand, a taste test on ice cream was conducted. Different tastes and textures of ice cream were utilized, and 20 questions were set for each flavor (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). The participants were asked to answer the questions after an ice cream intake.
Results
According to an analysis of variance, the stress hyperphagic and stress hypophagics took a comparable amount of ice cream during the neutral conditions. In social exclusion conditions, the stress hyperphagic significantly consumed more ice cream than hypophagics. While in social inclusion conditions, the stress hyperphagic consumed less ice cream than the stress hypophagics (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). The results are based on the graph presented in the article. The numbers indicate the change in ice cream consumption among the stress hyperphagic and the stress hypophagics in different situations, which explains the effects of stress and other factors in eating habits among individuals.
Conclusion
Based on the article’s finding, food consumption among different individuals changed based on positive and negative social conditions. Stress hyperphagic people eat more during stressful and negative conditions. On the other hand, they react hypophagically to pleasant and calm situations. Hyperphagia tends to lose their appetite for food during neutral and social inclusion situations. In contrast, stress hyperphagic people eat less during stressful situations and eat more during pleasant and calm situations. The high food consumption among the hyperphagic during stressful and difficult moments accounts for the weight gain among individuals. According to psychological statistics, the stress levels among Americans have increased over the past five years (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). As a result, obesity and weight gain have been major health situations facing most of these citizens due to their stress response.
Nonetheless, there is an inconsistent link between weight gain and stress. Stress hyperphagic eat more during stress but compensate during calm and positive situations. They eat less during positive and neutral conditions, covering the stressful and difficult moments. And so, the major difference between stress hypophagics and hyperphagic is their difference in food consumption across different situations rather than the total amount of food consumption (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). The stress hyperphagic relate to food as comforting during stressful situations, while the stress hypophagics relate to food as a reward during positive circumstances, and this explains the difference in food consumption during different situations.
Critical Evaluation
The article reveals the difference in food consumption among the stress hyperphagic and stress hypophagics. It indicates that the stress hyperphagic eat more while experiencing stress while the hypophagics eat less during similar circumstances. It also explains why there is that difference among the different groups. The stress hyperphagic find comfort in food during these difficult moments, while the stress hypophagics identify food as a reward during the positive times (Sproesser, Schupp & Renner, 2014). The methods used were appropriate as they placed the participants in different situations and got different reactions that were relevant for the study. Also, the taste test was relevant in identifying food consumption in different circumstances. Regardless, the study focused on social conditions as sources of stress and did not involve other conditions such as physical and economic conditions.
The sample used in the research was randomly selected, which makes the statistics unbiased and appropriate for use. However, it is recommendable that a different sample would have been used. It would facilitate comparison with the other results for a more accurate conclusion. A difference in results among the samples would help identify other factors that might affect food consumption in different situations.
