Juvenile Intervention and Prevention Program
Introduction
Juvenile delinquency rises as the internet proliferates society, creating new and unique challenges. Whereas traditional forms of crime are identifiable and convictable in a court of law, digital crimes are passive yet damaging. There is a need to rehabilitate delinquents in society, especially students in junior high; adolescents. These individuals are in a delicate position between childhood and adulthood. Consequently, this is the ripe age to format these individuals to fit into society. Students in junior high school turn delinquent due to Adverse Childhood effects, exposing them to a relatively ineffective justice system. However, through intervention and prevention programs, juvenile junior high students can acclimatize to society by dealing with their trauma causes.
Profile and Risk Factors
Juvenile delinquents are students who engage in behaviors contrary to set standards in schools and society. In analyzing juvenile delinquents, it is imperative to understand the psychosocial profile of these adolescents and the risk factors involved in molding such behavior. In parts of the world, crimes like rape, murder, attempted murder, sexual harassment, robbery, kidnapping, and human trafficking as part of the portfolio exhibited by juveniles (Patowary & Gopalan, 2019). These juveniles are incapable of seeking novelty, like bettering their lives. Instead, they want to maintain a status quo to self-directness, which imposes obedience to self-decision and directions. Juvenile delinquents wanted to make decisions about their lives and create a narrative for themselves in the present circumstances (Patowary & Gopalan, 2019). Juvenile delinquents will not seek novelty fulfillment by stubbornly dictating fulfillment within their lives while shunning social norms such as playing games and other novelty ideas.
Risk factors for juvenile delinquency come from adverse childhood effects. When children are victims of abuse and neglect, there is a higher risk of involvement with the justice system (Ryan et al., 2013). Abuse is the most damaging form of adverse childhood effects in existence. Whether physical or sexual, children are subjected to maltreatment resulting in a loss of self. Some children will suffer in silence while others will emulate their abusers thereby inflicting pain and suffering on others. Neglect fosters an independent spirit of self-determination exercised by a naive and inexperienced adolescent. Students and adolescents must receive guidance from their guardians to shape the future (Ryan et al., 2013). However, when advice is missing from neglect, a child is left to fend for themselves and experiment. This potent mixture of abuse and neglect forms the basis of risk factors that turn children into delinquents.
Corrections and Detention
The goal of incarceration in juvenile delinquency is to achieve behavioral change and an overall organic assimilation in the society. Detentions are temporary holding facilities where juveniles are kept waiting the court system or placement (Furdella & Puzzanchera, 2015). Juvenile delinquents enter the justice system to rehabilitate their various advanced behavior. However correctional facilities may not offer long-term solutions to present challenges faced in the justice system (Beaudry et al., 2021). Leaving detention centers back to the same environment that this juvenile delinquent was in can be detrimental to the changes that one makes in the facility.
Detention and corrections fail in providing aftercare to this delinquent due to a thinly stretched judicial system social workers are incapable of tracing and continuing the rehabilitation process of delinquents once they leave detention facilities. Additionally, there is a current and worrying trend in the rise of mental health disorders among juvenile delinquents within correctional facilities (Beaudry et al., 2021). Major depression ADHD conduct disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder are some of the illnesses the juvenile delinquent speak during their stay in correctional facilities. The students are often placed within systems designed to bring out conformity by pushing a person’s personality to the Reyes and emphasizing social conformity. The failure to conform to society may lead to a rise in mental health disorders. Additionally, correctional facilities bunch delinquents together regardless of the crimes that they have committed. Teenage murderers’ rapists and robbers are placed together with truants, another minor offender. The ensuing bullying, harassment and abuse causes widespread mental health disorders among up to 30% of incarcerated delinquents. Changes needed in a dressing the role of correctional facilities two words behavior change.
One such adjustment is the introduction of an open and supportive living room climate within correctional facilities. Open climates are characterized by endearing support evident and present opportunities for growth flexibility between organizational needs for control and development in adolescence (van der Helm et al., 2014). An open climate emphasizes coping mechanisms for incarcerated youths. For example, youths are gently assisted to confront their behaviors thereby owning their problems. Once they own the problems, they are guided into forming different sets of habits that will enable them to fit into society and govern themselves. Ultimately open climate within detention centers will reduce periods of sentencing, thereby reducing mental health illnesses and instances of abuse within correctional facilities among juvenile delinquents.
Juvenile Courts
The juvenile courts are the first point of contact between delinquents and formal social structures. In 2013, females were incarcerated more than their male counterparts (Furdella & Puzzanchera, 2015). However, there has been an overall decline in the number of delinquents being incarcerated in facilities. The majority of the cases that led to juveniles being detained revolved around property and drug abuse. Are the intake levels cases are determined as to the admissibility with up to 18% being dismissed at this level YouTube a lack of legal sufficiency. However, more than half of delinquent cases are handled formally in a court of law. However, in some States juvenile cases Mayweather may waiver jurisdiction choosing to try the adolescence as an adult. The review of the case it’s admissibility as well as gravity is determined before transferring an adolescent to the criminal justice system to be tried as an adult. For example, a juvenile may have been tried separately therefore proving that juvenile systems do not deter the person from committing offences (Furdella & Puzzanchera, 2015). These repeated offences form legal jurisdiction to try and adolescent as an adult. Additionally, other crimes May very in gravity, thereby prompting the court to try search in the criminal justice system. Court hearing begins with a judicator re and disposition where responsibility is assigned to the delinquent for the alleged act (Furdella & Puzzanchera, 2015). At this point, the case moves to disposition to decide what sanctions it should impose on these dispositions vary in severity from residential placement to intake at a juvenile facility. However, other cases are dismissed at this point or given probation as a maximum sentencing. Overall cases dealing with delinquents have declined as teenagers are either tried as adults’ orphans’ probationary sentences for minors’ delinquencies.
Prevention Programs
A popular intervention measure to deter delinquents from the course of action is visiting penitentiary institutions and listening to the experiences of inmate’s period in popular programs such as scared straight juvenile delinquents are made to participate for a day in open penitentiary systems. Is juvenile delinquent get to hear testimonies from inmates as they relate on the horrors of open incarceration and the adverse effect it has on lifestyles (Petrosino et al., 2013). This method has been praised to be one of the most effective strategies in deterring delinquents from the cause of action. However, reviews on programs such as scared straight demonstrate that such interventions are more helpful than doing nothing. Due to the lack of role models while growing up, some teenagers find their role models in such problems wanting to emulate the toughest incarcerated inmate, thereby earning the respect of their peers. Additionally, such methods elicit fearful reactions which may lead to harmful effects such as post-traumatic stress disorders.
The most effective prevention program will incorporate attrition and a bearing of responsibility. Attrition is generated when a juvenile understands the severity of their actions as well as the consequences tied to the search option within social norms. Additionally, attrition coupled with behavior change models’ delinquents to be better fitted for society (Petrosino et al., 2013). By giving juvenile delinquents coping mechanisms high schools and social camaraderie, juvenile delinquents are less likely to commit offences as they will belong to a social group and contribute positively to the enhancement of society. Therefore, instead of hoping to scare juvenile delinquents from their cause of action, positive and affirmative action is necessary to change behaviors among teenage juvenile delinquents.
Treatment strategy
Finally, effective treatment strategies involve intake and identification of problems transition and treatment. Identification of problems and campuses the written documentation detailing the various social-psychological challenges that juvenile delinquents currently face (Knight et al., 2015). These may include interpersonal as well as intrapersonal challenges cited by the delinquent and close family members. The intake is critical in determining the extent and severity of the delinquent treatment. The type of support will be based on screening full assessment and a needs-based analysis that is conducted partly in the justice system and in health care facilities. Once a delinquent need is r identified they are either referred to a psychiatric facility or any other form of psychosocial assistance that they may require. Once they are referred treatment is initiated by allowing delinquents 2face the root cause of the challenges in conforming to society (Knight et al., 2015). After six weeks of engagement delinquency released back to society and continue with frequent treatment entering the treatment phase. The three-prong approach to treatment is the most effective method of rehabilitating delinquents back into society.
Conclusion
Adolescents can be rehabilitated and assimilated back into society despite facing challenges from childhood and being incarcerated in an imperfect system. Adverse childhood effects emanate from abuse and negligence from guardians assigned to care for adolescents. Through their failure, adolescence develop knowing that they have self-determination and can govern themselves. These teenagers, in turn, fall into the long arms of the law, which try to rehabilitate them using ineffective methods such as visiting prison facilities. However, through systems such as preventative programs, delinquents can be assisted to assimilate back into society. As delinquent adolescents learn to address their challenges, they will develop proper coping mechanisms and identify with a people.
