Jesse Powell is a Jamaican R&B/Soul songwriter-singer who Louis Silas discovered. Powell is famous for his hit “You,” which peaked at Number 2 R&B best song, and on the Billboard Hot 100, it was Number 10. With Powell having released four studio albums to date (Jesse Powell, “Bout It,” JP, Jesse), he is a Grammy-nominee. Apart from being a musician, Jesse Powell is a prominent investor and entrepreneur in the Cryptocurrency industry. He is majorly known for his position as the CEO and co-founder of the Kraken digital asset exchange. Powell is also an avid exponent of cryptocurrency and an opponent of government over-regulation of the crypto space.

 

Jesse Powell studied Philosophy concentrating in Ethics and Law at the California State University, as stated in his LinkedIn profile. Apparently, Powell dropped out of the University, according to CoinMarketCap. Having dropped out of University, Jesse founded and co-founded a wide range of Businesses following his college years. He founded Verge Gallery and Studio Project in June 2007, which he ran till 2010. According to Cointelegraph, Sacramento’s one of his business ventures was the most extensive contemporary commercial art gallery at the time. 

 

In April 2010, Powell founded Verge Centre for the arts, a spiritual successor to Verge Gallery & studio Projects. Powell was a Board member as of May 20, 2021, at Verge Center for the Arts. Powell has also co-founded Lewt, Inc., founded in October 2001. Lewt, Inc was established as a marketplace for virtual items for virtual worlds and MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), and Internet Ventures & Holdings, founded in July 2006 as a gamer-oriented of content network, forums, and online service. 

After he founded a service assisting players in online games in 2001 with in-game currencies and account management, Powell got involved in digital currencies, writes Cointelegraph. According to his LinkedIn profile, Powell went on in August 2011 to establish the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange. A question arises, what is Kraken? To simply answer that, we’d say, “Kraken is a United States-based cryptocurrency exchange and bank.” The business provides trading between cryptocurrency and fiat currencies and provides price information to Bloomberg terminal. Kraken is available to all 48 US states and 176 countries residents. It lists 95 cryptocurrencies available for trade as of December 2021.

 

Kraken’s launch was associated with the now- antiquated Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Mt.Gox which was hacked in the summer of 2011, leading to the theft of digital assets stored by the company. According to Wired Magazine, a sum equivalent to 8.75 million dollars was lost. Wired Magazine writes that Powell traveled to Tokyo to support Mt. Gox and his friend Roger Ver who is also a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world. Concurrently Powell started working on a replacement for when and if Mt. Gox failed. 

 

In an interview with Bloomberg, Jesse Powell said, “It was clear after that hack at Mt. Gox when they were down for like a week that exchange is the most critical piece of the ecosystem. I wanted there to be another to take its place if Mt Gox failed,” said Powell. Having made his vision clear now, Powell founded the Kraken Cryptocurrency exchange a month after his Tokyo trip in 2011. The official preliminary release of Kraken occurred in May 2013, according to Finance Magnates.

 

In March 2014, Kraken received 5 million dollars in a series funding round. Shortly after that, in April 2014, cryptocurrency information was being provided by Bloomberg based on data from Coinbase and Kraken. Shortly after being launched, Kraken acquired a unique position in the crypto industry and a large user base, which happened in a few years. In September 2020, CoinDesk reported Kraken to have been the first cryptocurrency firm in the united states to become a bank. 

 

Wyoming Banking Board voted to approve Krakens application for a particular purpose depository institution (SPDI), making Kraken the first (SPDI) bank in Wyoming. At the time, Kraken was also the first newly chartered bank in the states since 2008. In 2020, Kraken launched its services in Australia and Japan, bringing the total number of countries where Kraken offered services to 190. CBNC reported that Kraken had more than 6 million clients and was the fourth largest crypto exchange by trading volume in April 2021. “Bitcoin really had had a meaningful impact on Kraken’s success in the first quarter of 2021,” says Jesse Powell

 

In 2021, Kraken saw four times as many users as in the second half of 2020, CNBC writes. Spot trading volumes reached a record $160 billion – 1.5 times higher than 2020.

Powell is an active cryptocurrency advocate. He believes that Bitcoin will become more valuable with due time. On March 4, 2021, Powell told Bloomberg TV that “Bitcoin is going to infinity,” adding that Humanity may soon give up using the US Dollar. Powell told Bloomberg Crypto that Bitcoin would grow and might even be worth millions of dollars by 2022. Powell is also an adversary of the regulation of crypto. According to CNBC, he thinks that this regulation “could hurt crypto and sort of kill the initial use case, which was to make financial services accessible to everyone.

 

Besides being Invested in Cryptocurrency, Powell also had a music background and career.

He attracted the attention of Carl Roland in 1993 while performing in talent shows with his family, a producer in Kansas City. Following an artist showcase, Louil Silas. Jr signed him to Silas Records imprint. He completed work on his debut album three years later. 

“All I need,” which was his first single, was written by Powell, Sam Salter, and Laney Stewart in March 1996. After its release, “All I Need” received moderate airplay on BET and Urban stations, peaking at Number 32 on the Billboard R&B chart. Released on March 12 in 1996, his self-titled album opened at Number 35 on the Billboard R&B and number 32 on the Heatseekers chart. The second single, a remake of the classic “Gloria,” garnered Powell another charting single, Number 51 on the Billboard R&B the following year.

 

Powell afterward began to work on his second album, debuting the leading single” I Wasn’t with it” in 1998, which became his first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Bolstered by the success of his single, his sophomore album about It was released on September 8, 1998, opening at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart (for artists who have yet to crack the Top 100 on the Billboard 200). The album Experienced moderate sales at first, up to the release of the set’s second single, “You.” The single was included on Powell’s self-titled debut. It, however, proved to be people’s favorite and was included in the album ‘Bout it’ and released as the second single in February 1999. 

The single, “You,” became his most significant and signature hit. Peaking at number 2 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album gained sales steadily and would eventually be certified by the RIAA, peaking at number 15 on the R&B and Number 63 on the Billboard 200. This resulted in him being moved out of the Heatseekers chart as an artist. In addition to working on his third album, a third single, “Bout It, “followed later that year.

 

After the merger of Silas Records into MCA Records, Powell’s first release on the label would be the single “If I” in the year 2000. His third studio album JP was released on March 27, 2001, where it opened at number 18 R&B and Number 71 on the Billboard 200. A second single, ‘Something in the past”, which was at number 67 R&B, would follow; this is in addition to Powell promoting the release. 

In 2002, he left the label and signed with Riviera Records. “Jesse’, his fourth album, was released on October 14, 2003. It was supported by “By the Way” at number 99 R&B and “Touching It Tonight,” peaking at No 85 on the Billboard R&B chart. He would later retire from the music industry, making the album “Jesse” serve as his last release before venturing into the crypto world. He currently resides in Los Angeles and continues to collaborate with other artists on their music and television production.

In April 2019, dirt reported that Powell had purchased a mansion in Mandeville Canyon, Los Angeles, for 11.5 Million Dollars. — all in cash.
