IMPORTANCE OF APPLICATION OF BREEAM (BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT METHOD) IN CONSTRUCTION TO REDUCE THE CARBON EMISSION FROM THE BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SITES IN THE UK
 

1.0 Introduction 

BREEAM, or “Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method ” stands for the first “sustainability rating scheme” in the world that is mainly focused on sustainable building design, construction and use in the UK along with the building environment. Till now, BREEAM has been used in more than 260,000 building assessments in around 50 countries (Bream, 2020). In contemporary times, the construction industry around the world, including the UK, is increasing significantly, which is continuing in environmental degradation as well. It, therefore, has become necessary to identify some layouts that affect environmental degradation, CO2 emission, and other factors in a positive way. The BREEAM certification process is something that helps the clients and project managers to be assured about the sustainable value of the construction project. This feasibility report, therefore, is going to identify the ways the application of BREEAMs helps the construction projects in reducing carbon emission and enhancing sustainability in the UK construction sites. 

After establishing in the 1990s, it has become one of the most extended established methods that are used to assess the sustainability value of the buildings. This assessment process undertakes independent licensed assessors that use sustainable scientific metrics that indicate a range of environmental issues (bream, 2021). It can be used to create awareness among owners, designers and occupiers regarding the benefits of sustainability and the way they can take its maximum advantage by applying a sustainable approach in building construction. 

2.0 Aims and Objectives

The main aim of this report is to evaluate the importance of using BREEAM in UK construction projects and the way. 

While the prime objectives of this report are:-

• To evaluate the main idea of BREEAM
• To identify its importance in UK construction projects. 
• To evaluate the way its maximum advantages can be gained. 

3.0 Outline of Various Stages

3.1 Literature Review

BREEAM has been effective for several construction hazards that have made it to be one of the most liked certification technologies in the UK construction world. It seems the application of BREAM helps the clients and project owners to manage the risks and find appropriate mitigation processes through sustainable planning, design, and operation or refurbishment of the construction projects (bream, 2017). Along with that, it also lowers the running project costs, maximizes the market return value, and attracts as well as retains the tenants with the desirable workplace. 

According to Agha et al. (2020), the effectiveness of BREEAM can be seen in terms of reducing construction wastes and material usage. The Going for Green report further noted that the use of BREREAM is pushing the construction managers to aim for Zero Carbon through their operation. It has been identified that BREEAM works mainly in three categories that include developers, tenant building and owners. This process has been successfully implemented in countries like China, India, Oman and Pakistan as well. However, these countries, despite moving forward to this application, are more integrated towards using the traditional way of construction methods. According to Almeida and Ferreira (2018), “In European countries, buildings are the major energy consumers due to the general low energy performance of the existing building stock. To achieve the ambitious targets for emissions reduction, it will be necessary to take actions for its large-scale renovation”. In the contemporary standard Ritik coronavirus, it is also very much necessary to take appropriate action for the large-scale integration of existing building storks. With the growing concerns over current standards of construction projects, the focus was developed on new buildings guiding as a group energy performances to minimize the expensive process and complex procedure of construction, which are seldom accepted by the stakeholders. Like other European countries, the UK is also facing the issues of environmental degradation due to construction projects. The UK Green Building Council has reported that in 2012 and 2013, the construction sector was the largest waste producer in the UK (bream, 2021). According to Edwards al. (2019), BREEAM  helps to reduce pollution, carbon emission and waste reduction from the construction projects. It also claims that this process helps in the accomplishment of life cycle energy that incorporates green guide specification, which is at most helpful to analyze the life cycle energy impacts of the used materials. BREEAM ensures Environment quality through holistic, accessible and balanced measurements of the environmental effects. As construction projects are associated with numerous environment-related risks and this industry is growing fast around the world thus, it has increased the importance of identifying the best way through which the presets can apply BREEAM. While focusing on the outcomes of the construction projects, it seems that it is a significant contributor to pollution and environmental disruption. It can happen due to excessive carbon emission, waste generation, using different materials. Controlling these risks is only possible either by managing the pollutants or by reducing their age (springer, 2014). It has been seen that BREEAM succeeded in reducing carbon emission by at least 13% from the construction projects. Increasing the application of BREEAM to reduce emissions requires to aware the project owners regarding the application. Along with that, it is high time to integrate the clients as well as the users about the benefits of BREEAM and the way it contributes to the Environment. A successful BREEAM implementation ensures cost-effectiveness; thus, a proper projection of this process will help the project owners to attract more consumers toward this. Regardless of severe challenges regarding achieving the BREEAM certification, there are different ways through which the construction projects can maximize the benefits and value that can be gained from the certification process. It is also possible to include this process in the CSR policies, which will motivate the companies to use this process for leaving positive contributions to the Environment. It has already been seen that Tata Steel, AECOM, British Construction;l Steelwork Association Limited are already implementing this with the Goal of Target Zero from their construction project (bream, 2021). However, to reach this aim, the industry needs to have a clear idea regarding the amount of carbon it emits from every construction project. In this process, they can use the CBN Expert, which is an appropriate platform that monitors the carbon footprint of a construction project. It can be calculated every month to have a brief idea accordingly. It then can be audited to analyze the way it is impacting the Environment and will motivate the construction project owners to identify the steps that can help in mitigating the negative impacts and get BREEAM certification. However, to achieve this, the construction company owners will be required to give “One to one support” and develop strong communication with each other. It is to remember that one of two companies cannot achieve the maximum benefit of a BREEAM application if they do not have work accomplished. The collaboration will help them in assessing the way others are applying BREEAM and planning to reach Net Zero (cleantechbusinessgroup, 2021). It will also give a brief idea about technology application, feasibility and procurements. Regardless of this, the proper way of communication will help in developing networks between the stakeholders through which the companies will be able to create new ideas regarding the use of BREEAM and reducing the carbon emission from the construction projects in the UK construction industry. Moreover, it requires proper planning and design to implement these steps accordingly to achieve Net Zero within its estimated timeframe.

In this contemporary time, it has become essential to identify the environmental issues and raise smooth solutions to them. It seems China is also going for green, innovative, highly efficient and low carbon buildings by applying BREEAM. It has been used to develop a bridge over the Huangpu River in Shanghai. This development is pioneering the use of BREEAM in the Chinese construction market. Even in many countries, it has become a good resource for local authorities to drive for new sustainable homes. It can be said that the BREEAM certification process is accelerating the awareness regarding reducing carbon footprints in the Environment and generating sustainable value through its cycle. Not only the companies but the stakeholders are also equally responsible for understanding the importance of rescuing the carbon emissions and implementing sustainability for a sustainable as well as Environment-friendly construction industry in future.
