1. Introduction
Scope of the research
The leadership process is an integral part of managing any project. Start-up projects are essentially full of challenges as it needs to look at various dynamics other than the core functions. Managing people and making them work towards a common direction needs leadership qualities. There are several schools of thought on the leadership process and the best way to approach projects. This research is undertaken in order to evaluate and understand the need for leadership and its relationship with the success of start-up projects.
Research aims
The primary aim of research work is to evaluate the relationship between leadership and the success of start-up projects. The research work further aims to evaluate the relation based on projects from Sri Lanka.

2. Literature Review
Leadership theories
The transactional theory
The transactional theory of leadership is also known as management theory as this imagines the Designers of the leaders. On the other hand, the desire of the followers is not similar to the theory of a leader. Based on this theory of leadership, leaders should provide extrinsic motivation to the followers. The concept of this theory of leaders lays emphasis on the relation with followers (Hutton, 2018). The leaders are much responsive in the telestial theory, and they work within the organizational structure. Also, the leaders maintain their status in front of their followers. The objective of transactional leadership is to go through the punishment of reward system because this is a reactive system. On the other hand, this helps to improve the current organizational structure. This theory has a bureaucratic style, and the leaders focus on executing and planning. As a motivational tool, the leaders attract the followers by putting their self-interest in the first place.
The transformational theory
Transformational theory of leadership is also known as relationship theory, and here the leaders are proactive. Based on this theory, an individual looks for Continuous improvement of the organization of structure based on new concepts (Yaslioglu and SelenayErden, 2018). Here the leaders effectively promote innovative solutions to problems and generate new ideas for improvement. The transformational theory is suitable for turbulent environments, and it has a charismatic style. As a motivational tool, transformational leadership theory stimulates the followers as the leaders set group interests as the priority. The individual character of leaders is involved in the visual traits and individual life experience (Brown, Brown, and Nandedkar, 2019). The behavioural factor of a leader involves inspirational motivation, idealized behaviour, intellectual stimulation, Individualized consideration, and idealized attributes. Based on the quality of these leaders, the identification and collaboration of groups in hands. As a result, there is a commitment to the leader along with an improved vision.
3. Methodology
Research Approach
There are two types of approaches that are generally used by the researchers while conducting the research process. This includes the deductive and the inductive approaches. The deductive approach is used by researchers when a new logic is to be formed and is based on previous research and theories. At the same time, the inductive approach is based on testing the theories on the basis of literature evidence available from previous research work (Raziq et al., 2018). In this research work, the deductive approach will be undertaken to analyze the relationship between leadership and performance of the projects and is analyzed using existing concepts and theories.
Research design
Three types of research designs are generally used by the researchers in order to evaluate the research process. This includes explanatory, exploratory, and descriptive design. The selection of the appropriate research design is based on the research questions and aims of the research work. If the research objectives and aims are available, the researcher opts for descriptive design. Similarly, if the research aims and objectives are not available, the researcher opts for an explanatory and exploratory design process (Al Khajeh, 2018). This research work is set with definitive research aims and objectives; thus, the researcher shall use the descriptive method.
Data collection process
The data collection process is mainly divided into two broad parts. One is the primary research process, and another one is the secondary research process. The primary process is again divided into two more sub-parts which are qualitative and quantitative data collection processes. The qualitative process includes the interview method for data collection, and the quantitative method includes the survey process mainly. In comparison, the second method is based on collecting information from secondary sources such as articles and journals. In this research work, the researcher will choose the primary quantitative data collection method. It includes conducting a survey and collecting first-hand data.
Sampling and sample size
The sampling process includes two basic approaches when dealing with the quantitative data collection process. It includes the probability and non-probability sampling methods. In this case, non-probability sampling will be undertaken as the sample size is large. The survey will be conducted with 50 project managers from Sri Lanka.
Data analysis process
The data analysis process, which will be undertaken by the researcher, includes statistical analysis using excel (Mohsin, 2021). Graphs and charts will be included to have a better analytical view of the raw data collected.
Ethical issues
The researcher will undertake all necessary precautions to ensure data security to the participants. The researcher will provide the necessary information and also take consent from them before conducting the survey. The data will also be stored in the cloud storage and encrypted so that only authorized persons have access to the data.
4. Potential outcomes
Summary of previous work
A lot of research has been conducted to analyze and evaluate the relationship between leadership styles and the success of start-up projects (Prasad et al., 2018). Leadership styles such as transformational and democratic leadership are considered to be helpful for start-up projects.

The key points that need to be evaluated under the current research process include undertaking the evaluation of different leadership styles and analyzing their effect on projects.
