HISTORY OF THE WORD PHILOSOPHY

The word philosophy can be linked to its origin of two blended words from Greek (Philos), meaning to Love + (Sophos) which means wise. Philosophy, therefore, literally means the Love of wisdom (Priest, 2006). Philosophy was invented by Greek thinker Pythagoras during the 16th century. Philosophy majorly is the study of profound matters of human existence. A person who practices philosophy is called a philosopher. Philosophy arose to answer the questions on reasons for human existence and why things happen the way they are. Most philosophers tried to figure out the grounds for the existence of nature, consciousness, and the purpose of life. Ancient Philosophy was linked to studying the nature of things and life. It is noted that traditionally, the philosophers were referred to as sages until Plato and his disciple Aristotle reached the epitome of wisdom. Ancient philosophy is attributed to the age of 600BCE and the ancient schools of knowledge like epicurean, stoics, and Neo-Platonists.

The history of ancient philosophy enables us to put modern scholarly in its context. The rise of Christianity replaced philosophy by disqualifying Aristotlesvclaim on the demise of the human soul after death. After Aristotle’s death, his teachings were considered heretic by the Bishop of Paris. Before the Second World War, scholars worked based their evidence on Pluto and Aristotle. Cambridge Academic concord through their later philosophers considered the ideas of former philosophers futile. The Hellenistic period of323BCE- 30BCE was replaced by the University College of London, making it possible to develop the Hellenistic symposium.

In the modern world, philosophy is still studied in its original language form of Greek without being translated. Herman Diels tried to make copies of the original texts from Aristotle and needed up only editing but failed to translate the meaning( Barrionuevo 2018). This edited and translated philosophy is currently known as Commentarialin Aristotle Greece. The international team of scholars led by Norman Kretzman has eventually translated almost half of the ancient philosophy articles. Ancient philosophy has been subdivided into three categories that are Neo-Aristorian, Neo-Platonic, and Byzantine. Modern philosophers have come to adapt ancient philosophy for analytical purposes like metaphysics. Myles Burnyeat has re-analyzed Platonic texts and has proved that the text’s excellent sensitivity was used.

The idea that most ancient philosophers were consequentialists almost led to the disapproval of their literature. Still, later Michael Frede has translated the articles and proved that ancient philosophy argued on being and non-being. Modern philosophy is categorized into two; rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists believe that knowledge starts from a natural state, while Empiricists believe that knowledge begins from sensory experience. Fredrick Hegel came up with the idea that nature is rational and real( Obielosi 2018). This paved way to the setting idea on the science of society. Modern philosophy is called renaissance humanism because it emphasizes the value of humanity. Human activities have led to the development of political science. Scientific discoveries have led to other forms of derived philosophies like phenomenology, which study experience. Pragmatism links practice and theory; it describes a condition where theory is extracted from practice. The emphasis argument and clarity are best described in analytical philosophy.

Philosophy, like any other field, has evolved in different stages. The nature of things in their occurrences has helped solve questions in all aspects of life. Etymology explains where words originate(.Butchart, G.C,2018 pp 1-14). Modern science has helped philosophy acquire several derivatives like phenomenology, political science, renaissance pragmatism and many more.
