Foundations of American Political Thought

The political concepts introduced by John Locke are more relatable for me. The first concept is Religious Tolerance. The concept is mentioned in videos 2 and 3 from provided reference. Locke was one of the foremost advocates of freedom of belief which he mentioned in his Essay “A Letter Concerning Toleration.”Locke’s direct contribution to the First Amendment is his defense of religious tolerance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i4jb5XBX5s). Although tolerance in the American colonies preceded Locke, especially in the central colonies and the writings of Roger Williams of Rhode Island, Locke strongly supported the cause in his book on tolerance (1689). As a rational Christian, Locke rejected the notion that faith must be compelled and that devotion is a necessary religious or doctrinal requirement.

If the government were there to get a place, they would have no say in the religion: “The care of souls is not given to the Community Magistrate, as to other men. . . . Nor shall such power be granted to the Magistrate with the consent of the People; for no one can forfeit the care of his Salvation until now, as to leave it indiscriminately in the choice of any other “(ed. 1983: 26). Although Locke, in response to the religious wars of the day, acknowledged the legitimacy of the atheists, who thought that they lacked moral values, or Catholics, who felt that they were despising the law, he still tried to break the religious beliefs of the oppressors. And the power of the kingdom is corrupt. Because, in Locke’s view, it was a political union, not a religious one, that caused a conflict.

The basic ideas in the Second Covenant are deceptively simple. To understand government, Locke begins with the “original” state of humanity, which he describes as the pre-political “nature”: men and women who are in a state of complete freedom to plan their actions and dispose of people and their property as they see fit. Within the confines of the law of nature, without the consent or consent of any other person. “This is also the case for equality: in the absence of any natural rule, everyone is born with equal rights to “life, liberty, and property,” all that is right “as property,” the most important natural right (1952: 48). However, the environment is an unpleasant situation; as loving creatures, humans are often biased against each other and lack both the impartial “umpire” of conflict resolution and the impartial coercion of the law of nature (1952: 49).

When the environment descends into a “war zone,” these liberal and equitable peoples choose rationally to form a social agreement based on collective “consent” and guided by the “determination of the many” (1952: 55). Individuals renounce their natural rights to adjudicate disputes and enforce natural law, and in so doing relinquish their rights and form the primary power of government: law and governance, the distinction Locke uses to justify fundamental power divisions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i4jb5XBX5s). When any branch exceeds its rightful authority, people retain the right to revolt after a “long train of oppression” (1952: 126).

Right to Revolution, a concept emphasized by John Locke, I think is very important globally. This concept is mentioned in video POLITICAL THEORY-John Locke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZiWZJgJT7I). Right to Revolution is a concept that Locke introduced, which formed the basis of the U.S. Constitution. It was the concept of government scrutiny and evaluation. He also said that rebellion was not only a privilege but also an obligation, which influenced the Founding Fathers.
