Communication is paramount

Introduction

Communication is paramount in every relationship, as without systematic communication, the majority of the relationship dies.    It is essential for the partner, friends, and family how they are feeling and thinking (). This can be recognized as the fact that communication is not only essential for growth but also needed for formulating fulfilling and long-lasting relationships. Therefore, communication allows people to systematically share their expectations, opinions, and feelings. Various people or partners fail to converse because of fear of rejection that they will lose their partner or end up disappointing friends or family (). Furthermore, other than relationship handling, communication is also essential when answering a call or formulating a business report. Therefore, the main aim of communication is to discharge the duties systematically and effectively. Communication comes under an interpersonal skill which is an eligible criterion ().

As per the prevailing literature (), there are mainly four kinds of communication, including verbal, non-verbal, visual, and written communication. Verbal communication is the standard way of communication either in the form of face-to-face or by video conferencing, radio, or mobile phone. In contrast, non-verbal communication is the type of passive communication by deploying facial expression, body language, voice tone, and deploying gestures to share feelings and thoughts. Non- verbal communication presents the end effect with verbal communication. For instance, the person’s posture and tone reveal the emotions and mood of the person.

In line with the importance of communication, this essay will critically evaluate the video clip “The Unloved.”  To fulfill this essay’s aim, interviewing skills, listening skills, and the working alliance will be discussed. Furthermore, the recommendation would be given to improve the communication skill.

 Discussion

The video clip “The Unloved”   started with a conversation between Lucy (girl child) and Vicky (the lady driving the car). The discussion was deep as the child asked the woman that whether she believed in God or not. The child was seemed to be sad and depressed as she was seeking some help by asking this question. The answer given by Vicky was a genuine answer from her as she openly expressed her feelings. Vicky replied that sometimes it is hard to believe in God though still, she believes in God. The communication among the young girl and lady was about the life perspective as the girl child was trying to cope with some of the challenges in her life. The 42-second conversation between the child and the women demonstrates interpersonal communication, as both were sharing their ideas. Interpersonal communication is considered as an expression of emotions and thoughts non-verbally and verbally (). Interpersonal communication includes not only the message but also the facial expression and gestures.

Verbal communication can be defined as the utilization of the word to express in front of the other person. This type of communication includes both written and spoken communication. However, the majority of people prefer to describe their thoughts and feeling through spoken communication. Additionally, the verbal communication part refers to the selected words and how they interfered after hearing.   Good or effective communication is when the interaction between the two continues without any gap or the silence gap is filled with many feelings (). However, in the initial few seconds, the two actors were talking in context to spirituality. Vicky was trying to deliver her thoughts and feeling related to Indian God, and the young girl was not well versed with the “Krishna –the Hindu God.”  Spiritual communication is the connection between communication and spirituality (). Initial communication between the young girl and Vicky depicted the spiritual connection.

Moreover, Vicky tried to deliver her thoughts on the different religions and simultaneously asked questions. It is evident from the literature that questioning and answering during communication make the communication more live.   This can be attributed to the fact that if two people are really interested in talking to each other, then they try to question and reply so that the discussion goes on ().

During communication, the person can ask various forms of questions, though the main categories of the questions are closed-ended and open-ended questions. Closed-ended questions do not allow the person to express more or speak more, as the answer could be yes or no. In contrast, the person asks an open-ended question to fetch more detailed information and make the other person engage in the conversation. Hence, the open-ended question will generally get a more extended response and engage the person in an effective discussion. During the traveling, the aim of Vicky’s question was to fetch the information regarding the religious knowledge of Lucy, and the lady was able to bring the essential information. Hence,  the 42-second conversation demonstrated excellent and healthy communication between the young girl and the lady. The positive thing was that the young girl and the lady made eye contact while talking to each other.

Moreover, Vicky beautifully explained to Lucy about her spiritual thoughts and consideration and then countered questioned her to know Lucy’s knowledge regarding God. It is essential that during communication, one must actively listen to the person so that the person who is speaking feels worthy. Active listening is the prime driving factor in continuing the conversation. Though, in the initial 42 seconds, the young girl demonstrated the active listening skill as she was listening to Vicky without any interruption, which made her answer the following question of Vicky.

The next phase of the communication was in the shopping mall, which lasted for a minute. The conversation between  Vicky and Lucy for a minute in the shopping mall depicted that Lucy got comfortable asking the personal question from Vicky. It is evident from the prevailing literature () that when the two people start talking about their personal life while communicating, that demonstrates the trust-building process. It is paramount that the two people feel happy and comfortable while speaking, and when they reach that phase then they start discussing personal things. However, in the present video, the young girl was around 11 years old, and she asked  Vicky to relate to her partner, which seemed strange to me at first. However, when I played the video again, then I realized that the girl child might have been facing issues and struggling due to a bad relationship with her parents. However, the question asked by the little girl was not aged appropriate though Vicky handled her curiosity nicely and effectively. The answering style Vicky helped the little  Lucy to ask to continue the conversation. However, this conversation was concise, which still brought the ignite in the conversation. I believe that if, at this point in time, Vicky denied answering Lucy, then the scenario would be different as the conversation might be stopped. This conversation phase demonstrated that Lucy was in great need of love and emotional attachment. The little girl might be in a situation where she was seeking love from the male partner, who could be a brother or father.   As per the existing literature (), there are emotional barriers or supporters to communication; for instance, happiness is one of the positive emotional barriers. In contrast, pride, trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, frustration, and anger are some of the negative emotional barriers which hamper communication. People just need to be aware of the approaches, strategies, and methodology, which are essential in dealing with an emotional barrier ()

There was one more short communication between Lucy, Vicky, and an assistant in the shoe shop in the video clip. This conversation was extended for hardly one minute. However, the conversation continued after coming out of the shoe shop also. During this phase, Vicky tried to support and guide Lucy to buy something for her.    While shopping, it is essential that the assistant or service provider guide the client to pick the best option for her/ him. In the initial phase only, it was evident that the assistant was well trained and tried to fetch the need and feelings Lucky. However, the question was meant for Lucy about her preference of buying shoes. Though,  Vicky gave the response to the assistant, which I feel was not correct. This can be attributed to the fact that one must wait for the respondent to respond to the question meant for the person. Hence, Vicky must motivate the young girls to put forward her need to come into the shoe store. However,  Lucy talked about her choice that she wanted a sparkly one which demonstrated the confidence and relationship that she built with Vicky.   Most existing literature () indicate that people talk about their preference and put their points without fear in healthy communication. The same has been shown in the present case. One of the advantages of verbal communication is that it renders complete communication understanding and reduces the risk of misunderstanding. Furthermore, verbal communication is a reliable method of communication due to its flexible nature ().

In line with the above scenario, it can be concluded  Vicky was continuously motivating t Lucy to talk and communicate her choices. During the conversation, Vice asked a closed-ended question to  Lucy related to her comment on the selected shoes, and in reply, Lucy nodded her head. Nodding and smiling come under the non-verbal communication mode; facial expressions, voice tone, gestures, and body language are essential and powerful communication tools ().   During communication, understanding one’s body language and gestures help to understand more than spoken words. Et al. () demonstrated that professional and personal relation lies in one’s ability to communicate effectively using both verbal and non-verbal communication ().   However, nonverbal cues speak louder than words. For instance, I feel that  Lucy nodding her head on asking whether she liked the shoes or not was one of the non-verbal communication clues. Body language can be defined as the deployment of expression, mannerism, and physical behavior to converse non-verbally, which is usually done unconsciously. Whether the person is unaware or aware, during the continuous communication process, you are receiving and giving wireless clues and signals. All of your non-verbal clues-your gestures, your voice tone, your posture,  and your eye- contact – all aid in sending strong and effective messages ().

Non- verbal communication clues put an individual at ease, draw attention,  and build trust and help in delivering a clear message. Hence, in the present case, Vicky and the assistant demonstrated the beautiful combination of both verbal and nonverbal communication skills to find out the likeness of the Kid. Furthermore,  it is clear from the video clip that the child was also comfortable and felt valued as Vicky and the assistant were listening to her without interpreting her. I believe that the child may have felt loved and valued when the assistant and  Vicky were considering her choice and giving her options to choose. Moreover, the wigs and highlight questions asked by Vicky must aid in improving the confidence of Lucky.   Till this point of the video, I felt that both Vicky and the assistant deployed active listening practice in which the other person needed to listen to the other person more than just speaking or saying anything.   It is evident from the piece of literature () that one must listen to another person with all the senses and render full attention so that the person can feel valued and loved. Moreover, active listening serves the aim of earning others’ trust and helping people to understand the situation. Active listening includes the desire to grasp and offer empathy and support to the speaker.

Additionally, active listening is different from critical listening, as, in this, the listener does not evaluate the other person’s message. Moreover, during active listening, the other person doesn’t listen to offer their opinion. Hence, active listening is presented as the central pillar of any communication (). I also believe that active listening is an essential part of any communication as it helps the other person express freely without being judged.

The last phase of this session was about the office scenario and the interview of Lucy with the social worker. The aim of the last part of the video is to fetch the data from Lucy related to her parents and her normal routine checkups. Researchers/ social workers deploy various tactics to conduct the study or fetch the data from the client. The tactics can be categorized into two forms, including qualitative and quantitative methods. The researchers who adopt the qualitative method as the research methodology generally adopt the interview technique as data collection ().   Various pieces of literature () defined the qualitative interview as communication/ interaction amongst respondent and interviewer. During this process, the interviewer asks the question as per the pre-decided inquiry plan. However, it is not necessary that the interviewer ask the questions in a particular order ().

Moreover, an interview can also be described as a decided conversation. In 1986, Mishler claimed that an interview is a discourse form, and its specific nature demonstrates the systematic structure and interviewing aim. Additionally, the author added that interview is the amalgamation of what interviewers and interviewees communicate together and how both communicate with each other. The interview record that the researcher makes use it for the analysis and interpretation.

Therefore, it is paramount to understand that an interview needs a minimum of two people, who are interviewee and interviewer.  Additionally, the interviewer asks pre-defined questions throughout the process, and interviewees respond to the same. Though, it is essential to note that there is no single interview style that fits all occasions. Et al. () stated that interviewing includes a wide practice range, for instance, telephonic interviews, focus groups, face- to face interviews. Depending on the type of questions, setting, the role of the interviewer, the format of the question, and purpose, the interview can be divided into focus groups, depth individual, and basic individual interviews.

I feel that Lucy was a little nervous and uncomfortable while talking to the social worker. This can be attributed to the situation in which  Lucky did not respond to the social worker. I personally feel that the situation was really awkward as the purpose of the interview with Lucy was not fully fulfilled. Moreover, the questions related to her family made the client very uneasy, which was demonstrated through her silence. Silence is one of the non-verbal communication clues as it and the mental need of the person. The young girls did not give the answers to questions related to the emotional and parental domain. Throughout the interview, I realized that the client’s role was totally nil, and she seemed to be emotionally deprived. At one moment, the client asked about living with her mother, which made me think about the emotional condition of the child. Initially, I was unable to connect the video as the video started with the driving and traveling scene. However, in the end, I realized that the young girl was emotionally deprived and brought to the foster group. Moreover, it was difficult for me to watch the 6-minute video clip as I was feeling the pain of the young girl. When the social worker was asked about her parents and any kind of interaction from them, the response of  Lucy was very painful. The communication gap between the parent and child is one of the prime reasons behind the underdeveloped emotional and mental health of any child (). Many of the researchers () demonstrated that communication is the key to the overall growth of children. Additionally, I also felt the same that the girl child while shopping was so happy as she got that love and value from Vicky and the assistant. In contrast, the girl seems to be unloved and deprived emotionally of questions related to her parents. However, I  believe that the social worker must consider taking the interview in the presence of Vicky as the girl seems to be open and confident in front of her throughout the video.

Furthermore, the social worker must ask them open-ended questions to motivate Lucky for a relaxed and long conversation. As it is evident at 5:54 (video clip) that Jack ( social worker) asked the closed, honest question that leads to a one-word answer, this situation made me recommend that one can ask the open-ended question to fetch the quality and quantity data.   At 4:37, the conversation from Jackie’s end was too long, and the client answered in a single word. Hence, I recommend that the social worker must ask short and straightforward questions as it would allow  Lucy to express themself more openly and effectively.
