Banning Second-Hand Smoking

Canada is affected by the smoking pandemic like many countries across the globe; however, the situation is worsening every day hence the need for effective combative reforms. Smoking is legal in the country since it is a personal choice, hence the reluctance to enact a law against it. Also, it is a revenue generator. Hence, Canada and other developed countries have somewhat idolized the practice. It is an all-too-common sight to see people smoking in public mindless of others around them who are also affected. In trying to combat the dangers of smoking and its effects on these second-hand and thus involuntary smokers, legislation is integral. Instead of banning smoking altogether, it would be probable to ban secondhand smoking and thus use vast amounts of money in ensuring that only people who want to inhale the smoke. In this essence, secondhand smoking should be banned in Canada unless proof of age and a legal permit indicating the desires and need of these second parties to be part of the smoking escapades and thus inhale the smoke as a result. 

There are many other modest, modern, and instead tried methods of combating the dangers of second and smoking. However, banning second-hand smoking and the legal requirements seems to prove more effective through the structural exploitation of practical solutions in the process. Second-hand smoking is detrimental to the health of the affected, especially because there is no consent that they wish to be p[part of the smoking process (Giulia et al., pg. 129). Instead of being wary of the surround and putting up smoking zones, it is better to ban second-hand smoking altogether. Making smoking illegal would also work, but it is essential to consider people who want to intentionally increase their morbidity through inhalation of the chemical substance of the smoke. 

The second-hand smoking problem is prevalent as 25% of non-smokers and 30% of ex-smokers have reported exposure to secondhand smoking. The second-hand smoke inhaled involuntarily has over 7,000 chemical compounds that negatively affect the body (Bo et al., pg. 795-805). The impact is more on the children and youth, hence the need to protect them through the given proposition. The problem is prevalent considering the underage who are passively exposed to the same smoke without consent. There is a need to protect the underaged and the unwilling from the effects of secondhand smoking in Canada. The uncontrolled smoking behavior by Canadians has caused all these problems, and also the reluctance of the government to act accordingly. 

Instead of making smoking illegal or conducting campaigns against smoking, it is more effective to cannel the public resources, through the funding of the taxpayers to ban second-hand smoking, and making it mandatory for smokers to only smokers around people who have a legal permit to inhale the second-hand smoking and proof that there are above the legal age. Better control is achieved this way, and ensuring the proximity of smokers only has people who want to be there, thus banning the involuntary inhalation of smoke (Giulia et al., pg. 129). The government and the many resources and authorities can be better utilized to protect second-hand smokers instead of doing away with the practice. In doing this, it is more probable to let the healthcare sector plunge into the chaos caused by smoking diseases through willing first hand and not second-hand smoking. This proposal considers that firsthand smoking will perish at their peril despite the banning of secondhand smoking. In this case, they will still be affected by cancer, diabetes, health diseases, stroke, and lung diseases caused by first-hand smoking. 

Numerous research have confirmed that considering the specificity of secondhand smoking and not the entire problem is better applicable. This is because, despite the annual mortality and morbidity rates caused by smoking, willing smokers are needed for the profitability of these companies and the taxes derived from the smokable products. The solution for the government to ban secondhand smoking ensures the effects of smoking are kept averagely while ensuring the benefits derived from them. In this proposal, there is consideration of the lower self-control of smokers compared to the non-smoking population (Bo et al., pg. 795-805). In this case, it is more probable to protect the unwilling smokers and thus leave the willing smokers alone. This initiative is one of its kind, and resources are channeled in the recommendation. Despite the many doubts present, the proposition is effective, also considers the great care for the citizens, especially those unwilling to be second-hand smokers.  

The given solution is enforceable and can thus help control secondhand smoking through the legal permits and ID requirements. These measures have been used before, and the documentations verify the claims that they are indeed ready and willing to be in the vicinity of smokers. In this way, there is a foreseen reduction in deaths caused by involuntary smoking due to the low self-control of smokers. Smokers cannot delay satisfaction derived from smoking; hence easier to control those in rage during this activity instead of preventing its occurrence. In this case, 25-30% of smoke exposure to secondhand smokers will be reduced (Giulia et al., pg. 129). These statistics will eventually be transferred to the mortality and morbidity rates which will be reduced. 

From the verification of TV commercials, smoking is more harmful to passive than active smokers, and many volunteers have proven this to be the case. Canada can lead the world in this enaction and provide a solution that is considerate, caring, and more effective. The government will deploy the providence of smoke and portable air quality detectors to help in this solution. This is just one of the many ways the government can positively spend taxpayers’ money in the process of banning secondhand smoking. This solution showcases the development of Canada as a nation.
